History of the Borsa Italiana :

The Milan Stock Exchange (Borsa di Milano) was created on the 16th of January 1808. At this time there were five different market exchanges: Milan, Naples, Genoa, Trieste and Livorno. Until the beginning of the 20th century these markets exchanged not only stocks but also goods and currency.

Until 1991 the Milan Stock Exchange was open outcry, with an operator taking orders and reporting prices within the pit. This system was replaced by electronic trading on 18 April 1994, which guaranteed greater accountability and efficiency.

Borsa di Milano was government operated until 1998. It is now privately run by Borsa Italiana S.p.A.; shareholders include member companies.

Borsa Italiana also controls four other companies, which are responsible for the organisational, commercial and promotional activity of the group.
