03/05/10 - In Brazil, state oil giant Petrobras announced that it will acquire a 45.7 percent stake in Acucar Guarani, previously controlled by France´s Tereos.

The $920 million acquisition price, which values the Guarani group at $2.01 billion, will be made by Petrobras Biocombustivel, and will be made in three stages designed to increase Petrobras´ growth in the ethanol sector, as well as to accelerate Guarani´s investments in biofuels research and development.

In the first stage, Petrobras will invest $393 million in the Cruz Alta Participações subsidiary of Guarani, to which Tereos will contribute its Indian Ocean sugarcane and European starch assets. Over five years, Petrobras will have the opting to invest an additional $527 million, and Tereos will have the option to invest an additional $345 million. Under the agreement, Petrobras´ stake could rise by 2015 to as much as 49 percent of the new entity.
