SAO PAULO--Companhia Brasileira de Distribuicao (CBD, PCAR4.BR), Brazil's largest retailer by revenue, posted an increase in net sales in the first quarter, mainly on expansion in its nonfood businesses.

Net revenue for the company, which is controlled by French retail group Casino Guichard-Perrachon SA (CGUSY, CO.FR), totaled 17.23 billion reais ($5.63 billion), up 15% from the year-earlier period.

Sales of nonfood businesses expanded 23.5%, while food-division sales increased 8%.
