SÃO PAULO--Telefónica Brasil SA posted a 12% decrease in its first-quarter net profit amid higher operating and debt service expenses.

The company, which is controlled by Spain's Telefonica SA, posted a net profit of 579.7 million Brazilian reais ($191.7 million), down from BRL660.8 million in the year-earlier period.

Telefonica's operating costs increased 6% in the period to BRL6.4 billion, and its debt service costs more than doubled to BRL217 million.

The company's net revenue rose 4.3% to BRL8.98 billion.

The company had 97.18 million customers at the end of the quarter, up from 93.85 million in the year-earlier period.

Telefónica Brasil is Brazil's largest mobile-phone company by market share, according to telecommunications regulator Anatel.
