Dennis Fotinos was elected 2008-2009 chair of the International District Energy Association (IDEA) at the organization’s annual meeting held at its 99th Annual Conference & Trade Show in Orlando, Fla. Eight members also were elected or re-elected to the 21-member board.

Fotinos, President and CEO of Enwave Energy Corporation, one of the largest district energy systems in North America. As CEO, Mr. Fotinos' entrepreneurial drive guided Enwave Energy Corporation to profitability during a period of high volatility in the energy market. Under his leadership, Enwave developed the world-renowned Deep Lake Water Cooling project in Toronto. He previously served as vice-chair of IDEA and has been an IDEA member since 1998.

Juan Ontiveros, University of Texas at Austin, was elected vice chair; David Toombs, Citizens Thermal Energy, was elected 2nd vice chair, and Thomas Guglielmi, NRG Thermal LLC, was re-elected secretary/treasurer, all one-year terms. Robert Smith of RMF Engineering, Baltimore, Md., will serve as immediate past chair. Newly elected and re-elected board members to serve three-year terms are Johnathan Coleman, JA Coleman, LLC; Robert Maffei, Perma-Pipe; Aurel Selezeanu, Duke University; and Patricia Wilson, Affiliated Engineers, Inc.

“IDEA and the district energy industry worldwide is very fortunate to have these highly experienced industry leaders volunteer to serve on our board of directors during this period of serious global energy challenges,” said Robert P. Thornton, president of IDEA. “Their service will be instrumental to our organization’s continuing growth and success as we launch IDEA into its second century of service to the district energy industry.” District energy is an efficient, environmentally responsible method of heating and cooling buildings. District energy systems produce steam, hot water or chilled water at a central plant. The steam or water is then piped underground to individual buildings within a designated area for heating, cooling or use in industrial processes.

About the International District Energy Association The International District Energy Association (IDEA), with headquarters near Boston, Mass, is a non-profit association with more than 1,000 district heating and cooling executives, managers, engineers, consultants and equipment suppliers from 25 countries. IDEA’s mission is to support the growth and utilization of district energy as a means of increasing energy efficiency, reducing fuel consumption, and leveraging the use of sustainable energy resources to improve the global environment.

IDEA serves as an industry clearinghouse for business, technical and policy issues, and supports the district energy industry with technical training, peer exchange and consumer education and outreach. IDEA has held an annual conference and trade show for 99 consecutive years since its founding in June 1909.
