Responding to a ruling from the High Court today in the case of
Michael Cherney v Oleg Deripaska, a spokesman for Mr Deripaska said:
“This ruling is not on the substance of the
case between Mr Deripaska and Mr Cherney. Rather, it is a procedural
judgment about where that case should be heard.
“We are surprised by the court's ruling that
the case should be heard in Britain rather than the Russian courts,
given the fact that judge accepts that Russia is an appropriate place to
hear the case. We disagree with the pejorative claims made about Russian
courts in the judgment. We shall be seeking leave to appeal the decision
of the court, since we believe that the issues in the case fall clearly
within the jurisdiction of the Russian courts.
“On the substance of the case, we vehemently
reject the vexatious claims made by Mr Cherney, and look forward to
setting out our case on these claims."
