The San Jose Sharks showcased the future of clean, reliable,
always on electricity in the National Hockey League (NHL) when they
hosted the NHL All-Star Game in late January. The mid-season
classic was hosted at the Sharks’ home, SAP Center at San Jose,
which is powered by high tech fuel cells supplied by Bloom
Energy.
Bloom Energy Servers have the highest delivered electrical
efficiency of any commercially available electric power generation
system in the world. The Sharks have deployed the technology at SAP
Center, as well as at their practice facility, helping to lower
their carbon footprint as well as their electric power costs.
The Sharks and Bloom Energy have a long history together, first
collaborating in 2012 to bring Bloom Energy Servers — an always on,
on-site power solution that converts natural gas into energy
without combustion — to SAP Center and to Solar4America Ice. The
Sharks were one of the first professional sports franchises to
adopt this emerging technology. The Servers help reduce the Sharks’
reliance on more expensive local grid power, and decreases CO2
emissions significantly compared to the power the Sharks would
otherwise buy from the grid.
Over the past seven years, many significant improvements have
been made to Bloom Energy’s core technology, enabling the Sharks to
further reduce their carbon footprint. The latest generation Bloom
Energy Servers will provide 400 kilowatts of power at SAP Center
and 500 kilowatts at Solar4America Ice.
“Silicon Valley’s home team, one of the most innovative in the
NHL, deserves the cleanest, most reliable power,” said KR Sridhar,
founder, chairman and CEO of Bloom Energy. “We are delighted to
keep the lights on, the air clean, and the ice cold for the San
Jose Sharks.”
“Our energy and sustainability program has to be one of the best
in the league and we’re quite proud of it,” said Jon Gustafson,
vice president of Sharks Ice, LLC. “Our approach to both is a big
part of our plan as a business and member of the local community.
As the population density increases in areas like San Jose, the
demand on the grid gets higher. We needed to ensure we can meet our
operational goals while putting a good product together and for us
– it all starts with the ice.”
For sustainability and air quality initiatives, Bloom Energy
Servers add even more value. By generating electricity without
combustion, they eliminate the emissions that cause smog and
respiratory issues. This supports the Sharks corporate-wide
initiative of being more environmentally responsible within its
local communities, including with Climate Smart San José, the
city’s plan to reduce air pollution, save water, and create a
stronger and healthier community.
