U. S. Steel Releases 2019 Sustainability Report

United States Steel Corporation (NYSE:X) today released its 2019
Sustainability Report, detailing its accomplishments in
Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues of importance to
the company and its stakeholders. The report explores how the
company’s “best of both” strategy is transforming U. S. Steel into
a sustainable, competitive business that will continue to
contribute to the future well-being of its employees, customers,
suppliers, partners, stockholders and communities in which it
operates.

strategy of ‘best of both’ integrated and mini mill technologies,

environmental stewardship and innovation, that endure for future

address the areas that matter most to our stakeholders.”
U. S. Steel’s sustainability framework is centered around safety
and health, governance, ethics, innovation, protection of the
environment, greenhouse gas emissions, community engagement, and
people, inclusion and diversity. The report, aligned with the
Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), also includes an accounting of
the company’s significant progress toward goals on
sustainability-related issues. Highlights of 2019 performance
include:
- Achieving a new company safety record with a Days Away from
Work Rate of 0.10 for 2019, which is 80 percent better than the
Bureau of Labor Statistics for Iron and Steel rate of 0.70.
- Establishing a global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity
reduction goal in 2019 that recognizes the need to achieve GHG
emissions reductions using mini mills, energy-efficiency
initiatives, and through continuous improvement to U. S. Steel’s
integrated steelmaking facilities. The Company has committed to a
20% reduction in its global GHG emissions intensity by 2030 based
on 2018 baseline levels; and
- Recycling an average of approximately 3 million tons annually
of scrap steel in processes to create new steel, without any loss
in the material’s mechanical properties.
