Valero Energy Corp. (VLO) said Monday that its board approved a project to expand the Diamond Green Diesel plant in Norco, La., to 675 million gallons a year renewable diesel production capacity.

The expansion will add an independent parallel plant adjacent to the existing facility, as well as a renewable naphtha finishing facility, Valero said.

The plant is a joint venture between Valero Energy and Darling Ingredients Inc., the largest low carbon feedstock supplier in the world.

It is run by Diamond Green Diesel, a subsidiary of Valero Energy.

Valero said it expects its 50% share, or approximately $550 million, to be funded from cash generated by DGD's operations and for the project to be completed in late 2021.

The board of Darling Ingredients also approved the project.
