Dow Jones News
Boeing's troubled 737 MAX jet was hit with new groundings in
Singapore and Latin America on Tuesday, as the company struggled to
contain the fallout from Sunday's deadly Ethiopian Airlines
crash.Boeing shares fell more than 5% on Monday.
KEY FACTS
--- The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore said it was
"temporarily suspending operation of all variants of the Boeing 737
MAX aircraft.
--- Aeromexico said it was grounding its six jets "until more
thorough information on the investigation".
--- Brazil's GOL Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes and Argentine
carrier Aerolineas Argentinas took similar action.
--- China and Indonesia grounded the 737 MAX on Monday following
the Ethiopian crash, which killed 157 people.
--- There are concerns over similarities to an October crash
involving an Indonesian Lion Air 737 MAX 8.
Why This Matters
Usually, groundings would follow an instruction from the
regulator in the country that certified the aircraft type. In this
case, that is the US Federal Aviation Administration. But concerns
about the safety of the 737 MAX has now led several national
regulators to dispense with that convention. The FAA said on Monday
it has no plans to ground the jet, despite those concerns.Boeing
said on Monday it was in talks with regulators and airlines about
concerns they may have. "We are taking every measure to fully
understand all aspects of this accident, working closely with the
investigating team and all regulatory authorities involved," the
plane maker said.
