Procter & Gamble Co. (PG) said Monday that it aims to deliver 25 billion liters of clean drinking water to people in more than 90 countries by 2025 as part of a humanitarian project.

The company said the decision is part of its Children's Safe Drinking Water project, which it launched in 2004 and which has already provided 15 billion liters of clean water.

P&G said the project has 150 partners, including Walmart Inc. (WMT) and nongovernmental organization Save the Children.

The move comes as the company tries to raise awareness of the global water crisis. According to the World Health Organization, 844 million people globally lack basic drinking-water services and at least 2 billion use a contaminated drinking-water source.
