Leonardo SpA (LDO.MI) said Wednesday that Italian industries companies signed a statement of intent with U.K. defense firms to partner on future air-combat systems.

The companies--which include BAE Systems PLC (BA.LN), Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC (RR.LN) from the U.K. and Leonardo, Elettronica, Avio SpA (AVIO.MI) and MBDA from Italy--will work on a program named Tempest aiming at developing air combat systems.

The statement of intent follows the U.K. and Italian governments' commitment to work more closely on combat air capabilities, the aerospace and defense company said.
