--German pharmaceuticals and chemicals company Merck KGaA (MRK.XE) has met with potential bidders and financial advisers as it explores the sale of a pigments unit that could be valued at up to $1.7 billion, Bloomberg reports, citing sources.

--Germany's BASF and Switzerland's Clariant have both put their pigments operations on sale amid weaker demand in the automotive sector, Bloomberg reports.
