A fire broke out late Tuesday night at an Exxon Mobil Corp. refinery in Baton Rouge, La., but there were no injuries, a company spokeswoman said Wednesday.

While some reports initially indicated there was a large explosion at the 502,000-barrel-a-day refinery that sparked the fire, Stephanie Cargile, an Exxon spokeswoman, said by telephone "there was no explosion, only a fire." She added that the blaze has been contained and that an investigation into the cause has begun.

A Twitter account for Exxon's operations in Baton Rouge said the company and responders continue to assess the situation.

"We are responding to a fire at the refinery," according the @ExxonMobilBRA account. "We are actively monitoring the facility fence line and surrounding areas of the NBR [North Baton Rouge] community."
