Exxon Mobil Corp. on Thursday reported an equipment problem that caused above-normal gas emissions at its Baytown refinery in Texas.

"Hydrofining Unit 5B hydrogen knockout drum control valve failed [to] open, resulting in the safe utilization of the flare system," the refinery said in a statement to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. "The control valve was isolated and operational adjustments were made to minimize emissions...There is no impact to production."

It said the emissions of carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and other gases began Wednesday and lasted less than seven hours.

The 561,000-barrel-a-day Baytown refinery is 25 miles east of Houston.
