U.K. union Unite expressed disappointment at General Electric Co.'s intentions to cut 369 jobs at its site in Nantgarw, South Wales, calling on U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson to support the country's aerospace industry.

Unite said on Thursday that the further reductions would bring the total reduction of its headcount to almost 40% since the beginning of the year.

The news follows the company's recent call for 180 voluntary severance scheme for workers at the site.

However, the union said it remains behind its members and "will not move an inch" from its position that compulsory redundancies must be ruled out.

"The company needs to pause its plans and work with us to seek an urgent U.K. government sector deal for aerospace that could save these jobs," Unite Wales Regional Secretary Peter Hughes said.

Mr. Hughes lambasted the U.K. government's lack of support for the aerospace industry, and the chancellor for focusing on "gimmicks such as meal deals for August."
