Airbus SE said Friday that its division Airbus Defense and Space has won a contract valued at 380 million euros ($448.6 million) to lead a consortium for a temperature-check mission on Earth's surface.

The contract was awarded by the European Space Agency and includes the development of one satellite for the land surface temperature-monitoring mission, known as LSTM, with an option for two further satellites, the company said. The mission will expand the current capabilities of Copernicus, the European Union's earth observation program for global monitoring.

"The main objective of LSTM is to deliver global high spatiotemporal day- and night-time land surface temperature measurements. In particular, this mission will respond to the needs of European farmers to make agricultural production on individual farms more sustainable, as water shortages increase and changes in the environment take place," the European plane maker said.
