Leading Chinese chip maker Semiconductor Manufacturing
International Corp. said Wednesday that it has placed an order with
ASML Holding NV for more than $1.2 billion in chip-making
equipment.
SMIC also said it extended its procurement contract with the
Dutch company to the end of this year.
Last year, the Trump administration in the U.S. placed
restrictions on exports to SMIC, making it difficult for companies
in the U.S. and some other countries to supply the Chinese company,
especially with top-tier equipment.
SMIC is at the forefront of the Chinese government's campaign to
establish an independent semiconductor industry.
