Deutsche Post AG said Tuesday that its express-service provider business DHL Express is setting up a new cargo airline in Austria for intra-European flight as its current DHL Air UK airline will shift its focus to intercontinental routes.

The German freight-and-logistics group said DHL Express is already filing applications with Austrian authorities, aiming for the new airline to start operations later this year.

The new airline will operate intra-European flight services, using a fleet of aircraft to be transferred from DHL Air UK.

DHL Air UK will instead ramp up flights between the U.K., the Americas region and Asia with an expanded fleet.

"To meet the high demand of our customers for cross-border Express deliveries we take these measures to continue providing them with sufficient Express capacity. With the planned structure, we will achieve both, a flexible and even more resilient airline network in Europe and a better global integration by increasing our intercontinental flights," Roy Hughes, executive vice president of network operations Europe at DHL Express, said.
