Bayer AG welcomed its victory in the most recent trial considering a claim that its Roundup herbicide caused cancer, but hopes a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in a separate case will help put to rest yearslong litigation over the weedkiller.

Bayer in August filed a petition asking the top U.S. court to nullify an earlier federal court decision in favor of a plaintiff making similar allegations. Bayer argued that the company could not have warned of any cancer risk posed by Roundup because U.S. federal regulators had deemed it safe following multiple reviews.

Bayer has maintained that research shows the weedkiller does not cause cancer, and anticipates the Supreme Court will decide in the next few months whether to take up the matter.

A win at the Supreme Court, Bayer has said, could affect thousands of other Roundup cases the company faces.
