Volkswagen AG said Thursday that Chief Executive Officer Herbert Diess will continue to lead the car maker but will give up part of the responsibilities amid clashes with labor representatives.

Ralf Brandstaetter, who is VW's brand operations chief, will take over responsibilities for the auto maker's China business from Aug. 1 and the new Volkswagen Passenger Cars division from Jan. 1.

"With the resolutions adopted today, we are putting the Group Board of Management on an even broader footing," said Hans Dieter Poetsch, chairman of the supervisory board.

Mr. Diess, whose contract as CEO was extended this summer until 2025, has been under fire for weeks, clashing with labor representatives over the pace of the company's transformation to an electric-vehicle maker, and a potential departure had been speculated.

Volkswagen also changed other parts of its group management board.

Hauke Stars is taking on the newly created IT and organisation functions from Feb. 1, while Hildegard Wortmann will become board member for sales from the same day.

Manfred Doess will be in charge of legal and compliance matters, replacing Hiltrud Werner, who is leaving the company, also from Feb. 1.
