China Southern Airlines Co. plans to buy 96 planes from Airbus SE for $12.25 billion, a move to build up its fleet in anticipation of a speedy recovery in post-Covid-19 travel demand.

The airline plans to acquire narrow-body A320neo planes that are likely to be delivered between 2024 and 2027, China Southern said Friday.

The purchase of aircraft is expected to increase the company's capacity by approximately 13.0%, China Southern said.

Like many of its peers, the airline has been severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, which has curbed business and leisure travel world-wide. Airlines are seeing a revival in travel as countries have started to ease Covid-19 restrictions.
