Comcast Corp. on Wednesday said it has elevated Chief Financial Officer Mike Cavanagh to the additional post of president.

Comcast said Mr. Cavanagh would work closely with Brian Roberts, who remains chairman and chief executive, to manage the Philadelphia cable giant businesses and teams.

Comcast said Mr. Cavanagh, who joined as chief financial officer in 2015, would be only the third president in the company's 59-year history.

Mr. Cavanagh, who served as co-CEO of JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s corporate and investment bank from 2012 to 2014 and was once viewed as a possible successor to JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, stunned Wall Street when he left to become co-president of Carlyle Group Inc., jumped to Comcast after less than a year at the private-equity firm.
