Unilever PLC said Monday that it has appointed Hein Schumacher as its new chief executive officer, replacing Alan Jope who announced in September his plan to retire from the company.

The Anglo-Dutch retailer--which owns consumer brands such as Ben & Jerry's ice cream, Dove soap and Cif and Domestos cleaning products--said that Mr. Schumacher will become CEO designate on June 1 and then CEO on July 1, whereupon Mr. Jope will stand down.

He is CEO of the global dairy and nutrition business Royal FrieslandCampina and became a nonexecutive director of Unilever last October.

Unilever said on Sept. 26 that Mr. Jope had decided to retire from the company after five years in the role.
