Hapag-Lloyd AG and Shell PLC have signed a multiyear agreement for the supply of liquefied natural gas to the shipping company's ultra large dual-fuel container vessels.

Bunkering--or fueling--of the 12 new vessels is expected to begin in the second half of the year, the German player said on Monday. Using LNG will allow to reduce the carbon-dioxide intensity, a measure of how much greenhouse gas is emitted--of the vessels by up to 23% compared to conventional fuels.

Financial details of the deal weren't released.

Hapag-Lloyd also said it had entered into a strategic collaboration agreement with Shell to accelerate the decarbonization of alternative marine fuels.
