Moderna Inc. and International Business Machines Corp. have teamed up to explore the use of artificial intelligence and quantum computing in the development of Moderna's mRNA vaccines.

The companies said Thursday that they have signed an agreement for IBM to provide Moderna with access to its quantum computing systems and assist in exploring the potential application of quantum technologies in solving Moderna's scientific challenges.

Moderna and IBM also plan to apply an AI foundation model, called MoLFormer, that can predict a molecule's properties in the hope of better understanding the characteristics of prospective mRNA medicines.

Moderna said its goal is to use MoLFormer to optimize mRNA as well as lipid nanoparticles that encapsulate and protect mRNA as it travels through the body.

The companies said the combination of formulation discovery with generative AI would design mRNA medicines with "optimal safety and performance."

"We are aiming for breakthrough advances with quantum computing, so we are investing now in building a quantum-ready workforce, to be fully prepared to harness the power of this technology," Moderna Chief Executive Stéphane Bancel said.
