Volkswagen AG said Thursday that Elvira Toelkes will replace Christiane Engel as head of quality of assurance at Volkswagen Passenger Cars.

Ms. Toelkes will take up her new role May 1, the German car giant said. She has more than 30 years of experience in the auto industry, and most recently worked at Audi, where she led a digital transition in procurement and information technology.

Volkswagen said Ms. Engel will stay at the company as spokeswoman for the management board and managing director of technology at its research and development site in Osnabrueck, Germany.

Volkswagen Passenger Cars' quality-assurance division has 1,200 employees and oversees 28 production sites, the company said.
