FuelCell Energy Inc. has received an order from Exxon Mobil Corp. for equipment related to the alternative-energy company's carbon-capture partnership with the oil giant.

Exxon hasn't made a final investment decision on the carbon-capture project, with the order of a fuel-cell stack module and related engineering services intended for the construction of a full-scale prototype as a demonstration of the technology, FuelCell said.

The fuel-cell modules are designed to capture and concentrate carbon dioxide streamed through them from flues or other sources.

In May 2022, Exxon and FuelCell extended a joint-development deal for commercialization of carbon-capture technology.

FuelCell Energy shares rose 1.6% to $1.91 premarket.
