Tesco said Friday that Chair John Allan will step down from his role and as a director of the company at the annual meeting on June 16, and named Senior Independent Director Byron Grote as interim chair.

The British grocer said Mr. Allan's tenure as chair was due to end shortly and a succession planning process, already initiated in recent months, is expected to conclude in the near future. Allan had been appointed in 2015.

The company said four allegations have been made in the media in recent weeks in relation to Allan's personal conduct. Three of the allegations are vigorously denied by Allan and he has unreservedly apologised for the comment he made in the other.

"While we have received no complaints about [Allan]'s conduct and made no findings of wrongdoing, these allegations risk becoming a distraction to Tesco. We are well advanced in our search for a new chair and will make an announcement in due course," Grote said.
