Light Reading Insider Analyzes Next-Gen Sonet/SDH Chips NEW YORK,
July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Multiservice edge equipment based on tightly
integrated, next-gen Sonet/SDH silicon has radically improved
carriers' ability to offer packet services over legacy
infrastructure. Encouraged by this success, chip makers and
equipment manufacturers are now extending their activities to
smaller, less-expensive access products, finds the new Next-Gen
Sonet/SDH Chip Survey from Light Reading Insider
(http://www.lightreading.com/insider). "The access market is very
active," says the report's author, Simon Stanley. "Driven by the
demand from system OEMs, vendors are introducing new devices at 155
Mbit/s, 622 Mbit/s, and 2.5 Gbit/s with support for low-order
virtual concatenation." This focus on access is a lead indicator of
the buzz set to emerge around so-called "micro MSPPs" (multiservice
provisioning platforms), being developed to help carriers extend
their infrastructure closer to their customers and consolidate
services into a single pipe. Light Reading Insider's Next-Gen
Sonet/SDH Chip Survey is based on a detailed survey of 31 next-gen
Sonet/SDH silicon products from the ten major suppliers in the
market. Key findings include: * PMC-Sierra was among the first
companies to identify the importance of next-gen Sonet and is now
perceived as a leader. * Only three vendors include transparent GFP
functionality in their devices. * Several framer/mapper devices,
such as the Arrive AT-1300, Intel IXP2500, and PMC5337, now
integrate the core of a multiservice ADM in a single device. * The
latest devices from Agere, Arrive, and Infineon support 128 VCAT
groups, setting a new feature bar. * There is major debate about
which vendors have fully interoperable and hitless Link Capacity
Adjustment Schemes (LCAS). Silicon vendors analyzed in this report:
Agere Systems Inc. (NYSE:AGR.A); Applied Micro Circuits Corp.
(NASDAQ:AMCC); Arrive Technologies; Cypress Semiconductor Corp.
(NYSE:CY); Galazar Networks Inc.; Infineon Technologies AG
(NYSE/Frankfurt: IFX); Intel Corp. (NASDAQ:INTC); PMC-Sierra Inc.
(NASDAQ: PMCS); TranSwitch Corp. (NASDAQ:TXCC); and Vitesse
Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ:VTSS). The Next-Gen Sonet/SDH Chip
Survey is available as part of an annual subscription (12 monthly
issues) to Light Reading Insider, priced at $1,350. Individual
