Four Major Banks in Strategic Deal
Bartercard announces that its Australian subsidiary has linked its barter
platform with point-of-sale electronic transaction systems, Electronic Funds
Transfer Point of Sale (EFTPOS or EPOS). Four of Australia's major banks -
Commonwealth Bank of Australia, National Australia Bank, St George and Westpac
Bank - have agreed to the system.
For Bartercard's 25,000 Australian businesses who are members, the deal means
they no longer have to fill out a voucher which can take up to 10 minutes.
Instead they will be able to buy products by making an EFTPOS transaction. In
Australia, Bartercard processes more transactions than American Express and
Diners Club combined, with a large administration to handle printing,
distribution, phone authorisations and processing of the vouchers.
Commenting on the agreement with the banks, Wayne Sharpe, Executive Chairman
said:
"The Bartercard New Zealand experience is that approximately 70% of transactions
are now processed electronically, at a cost of up to 50% less than a voucher
transaction. Given that Bartercard Australia accounts for over 65% of Bartercard
Plc's revenue, and its largest cash expense is Head Office administration, the
net effect of this on our bottom line should be substantial.
The sheer size of our Australian business membership base was very appealing to
the banks, along with Bartercard's technology team developing all the software
and banking links. Two Banks are live now with final programming expected to be
completed by the end of March."
