The Dayton Power and Light Company (DP&L), a subsidiary of
DPL Inc. (NYSE: DPL), launched The Generation Center for Workforce
Knowledge and Development at 401 Starks Avenue in Manchester,
Ohio.
The Generation Center – a joint effort between DP&L and the
Utility Workers Union of America Local 175 – will combine all
functions for training and development for Generation employees
from DP&L’s Stuart, Killen and Hutchings Stations.
“We could not have accomplished this without significant
participation and commitment of Local 175 leadership and subject
matter experts,” said Paul Barbas, president and CEO of DPL and
DP&L, at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “DP&L is very
fortunate to have seven Local 175 instructors who have volunteered
to provide most of our instructor-led courses. In many cases, these
men and women are experts in their specific craft,” added
Barbas.
The curriculum at The Generation Center is a balanced mix of
instructor-led and vendor-led programs and courses that have been
created specifically for the DP&L employees at Stuart and
Killen in Manchester and Hutchings in Miamisburg. Gary Tindall,
manager, Workforce Knowledge and Development said that he and his
team have worked in close partnership with Local 175 to research
and develop all new course materials and to rewrite all job
descriptions for the power plants.
“I believe that the Utility Workers Union of America is the
safest and most qualified workforce throughout the nation’s utility
business,” said Kelly Cooper, president of Utility
Workers Union of America Local 175. “The only way we can
maintain that high level of safety and quality is through training.
DP&L has made a big commitment to the area and the community
with The Generation Center. ”
“It’s important to recognize the significance that safety plays
in our training. We layer safety into every step of every task,”
said Tindall. “Safety is important; and, while we have a business
to run, nothing is more important than the safety of our workforce.
To be safe we have to be educated.”
Attendees of the ribbon-cutting ceremony toured The Generation
Center’s 10 fully-wired classrooms as well as the simulated
equipment that has been purchased by the company for hands-on
training for employees.
