The U.S. Department of Energy said Friday that it has issued renewable-energy loan guarantees to back up to $624 million in loans to build a wind farm, a geothermal power plant and a biofuels plant.

The DOE said it finalized a partial guarantee for a $168.9 million loan to Brookfield Asset Management Inc. (BAM, BAM.A.T) and Freshet Wind Energy LLC to build a 99-megawatt wind farm near Concord, N.H.

The department also finalized a partial guarantee for up to $350 million of a loan to support construction of three Nevada geothermal power plants developed by Ormat Technologies Inc. (ORA) that together will generate 113 megawatts of clean, baseload electricity. NV Energy Inc.'s (NVE) Nevada utility has signed a long-term contract to purchase the power from the facility.

The DOE also finalized a $105 million loan guarantee for biofuels maker POET to build a cellulosic ethanol plant in Iowa that will have the capacity to make 25 million gallons a year. The company plans to use biomass, or plant material delivered by area farmers, as a feedstock for the cellulosic ethanol plant.
