KAMPALA, Uganda--Glencore International PLC (GLEN.LN) unit
Zambian copper-and-cobalt producer Mopani Copper Mines' workers
will get a 10% pay rise next year.
The deal, effective January 2013, ends months of negotiations,
union and company officials said Friday. Mopani chief services
officer Moses Chilangwa said the deal was done in "good time" and
Miners Union of Zambia President Chishimba Nkola said there was "a
high level of understanding" during talks.
Talks at other copper miners continue.
Zambia's unions negotiate annual labor agreements. There were
strikes at copper mines in late 2011 and early this year over
disputes.
There are some 60,000 union workers in the sector.
Copper accounts for the bulk of the country's exports.
Production hit a record 800,000 metric tons last year.
Mopani wants to boost production from 3.4 million tons of ore a
year now to about 5.1 million tons by 2018.
