Glencore PLC's Andrew Caplan is stepping down from his role as head of aluminum and plans to leave the company by the end of the summer, according to a spokesman for the company.

Mr. Caplan will be replaced by Robin Scheiner, who will take over responsibility for the company's aluminum business, and David Streule, who will take over its alumina operations. The news of Mr. Kaplan's departure was first reported on Thursday by Metal Bulletin.

Mr. Caplan joined the Swiss trading and mining giant in 2007, leaving rival trading firm Trafigura Group. He's led Glencore's aluminum trading and industrial operations since 2013. Before his departure later this year Mr. Caplan, who's leaving for personal reasons, will work with a number key clients.

Aluminum producers and traders have faced a challenging market in the past year amid a mounting glut of the metal and exports from China. A sharp downdraft in aluminum prices took a bite out of Glencore's trading business in the first half of 2015.
