Peru's Energy and Mines Ministry will allow a local unit of
Newmont Mining Corp. (NEM) to receive mining concessions in the
border area with Ecuador.
Peru's constitution prohibits foreign companies from acquiring
any property for mining and other activities within 50 kilometers
of its borders.
The government published a supreme decree on Thursday allowing
Newmont to obtain 20 mining concessions near the border with
Ecuador.
Newmont currently runs the giant Yanacocha gold mine in northern
Peru.
