Amcor Ltd. (AMC.AU) and Bemis Co. (BMS) on Thursday said the partial shutdown of the U.S. government has pushed back the closing of their union to the second quarter of the year.

The packaging companies said the shutdown has delayed U.S. antitrust approval and the review of shareholder meeting documentation by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Amcor in August agreed to buy Bemis in a stock deal worth about $5.26 billion. The companies had expected to complete the transaction in the first quarter.

Amcor and Bemis said integration planning for the deal is well underway, adding that the regulatory process in other jurisdictions is complete or progressing in line with their original expectations.
