FRIENDS PROVIDENT ETHICAL INVESTMENT TRUST PLC

The Company has today been informed that Aberdeen Asset Managers Limited sold
1,050,000 ordinary shares on 12 October 2000 on behalf of Aberdeen Preferred
Income Trust Plc.

Aberdeen Preferred Income Trust Plc now holds nil ordinary shares of the
Company (previously 6.26%).

This notification also serves to inform that Aberdeen Asset Managers Limited
sold 1,000,000 ordinary shares on 12 October 2000 on behalf of Leveraged
Income Fund Limited.

Leveraged Income Fund Limited now holds 900,000 ordinary shares of the
Company, representing 5.36% of issued share capital of that class (previously
11.32%).

Aberdeen Asset Managers Limited also purchased 2,050,000 ordinary shares on 12
October 2000 on behalf of The American Monthly Income Trust Limited.

The American Monthly Income Trust now holds 2,050,000 shares representing
12.22% of the issued share capital of that class (previously 0%).

The total number of ordinary shares managed by Aberdeen Asset Managers Limited
and its associated companies remains 2,950,000 ordinary shares of the Company,
representing 17.58% of issued share capital of that class.
