ABERDEEN PREFERRED INCOME TRUST PLC (the "Company")

APPOINTMENT OF ADMINISTRATIVE RECEIVERS

25 September 2002



Further to recent discussions with the Company's lending bankers, the Board of
the Company has been considering the future of the Company. Following continuing
deterioration in the value of the Company's portfolio assets, the Board has now,
with regret, invited the Company's lending bankers to appoint administrative
receivers. Tom Burton and Maggie Mills, two partners of Ernst & Young LLP, have
been appointed joint administrative receivers of the Company. Accordingly, from
today, all classes of the Company's securities have been suspended from trading
on The London Stock Exchange and from the Official List of the Financial
Services Authority.

The Annual General Meeting of the Company is due to be held on 26 September
2002. In light of the appointment of administrative receivers to the Company,
the formal business of the Company will no longer be of any relevance and the
Chairman of the Meeting will therefore move to adjourn the meeting.
