The Company has today been informed that, following the purchase of 500,000
ordinary 25p shares (representing 1.26% of the issued class of capital and
0.63% of the voting rights)and 2,750,000 income 25p shares (representing 6.92%
of the issued class of capital and 3.46% of the voting rights, on 24 August
1998, Aberdeen Preferred Income Trust plc now has an interest in 4,950,000
ordinary 25p shares, (representing 12.45% of the issued class of capital and
and 6.22% of the voting rights) and 5,339,709 income 25p shares (representing
13.43% of the issued class of capital and 6.71% of the voting rights).

As a result of the above transactions, Aberdeen Asset Managers now have an
interest in 7,750,000 ordinary 25p shares (representing 19.49% of the issued
class of capital and 9.74% of the voting rights) and 7,281,990 income 25p
shares (representing 18.31% of the issued class of capital and 9.16% of the
voting rights)
