The Company has been informed that, following the disposal of 2,750,000
ordinary 25p shares (representing 6.92% of the issued class of capital and
3.46% of the voting rights) on 5 January 1998, Aberdeen Preferred Income Trust
plc now has an interest in 3,550,000 ordinary 25p shares, (representing 8.93%
of the issued class of capital and and 4.46% of the voting rights).

As a result of the above transactions, Aberdeen Asset Managers Limited now
have an interest in 6,350,000 ordinary 25p shares (representing 15.97% of the
issued class of capital and 7.98% of the voting rights).
