The independent trustees of the Barclays Group (ESAS)
Employees' Benefit Trust yesterday notified Barclays PLC that
on 30 September 1997 they purchased 36,127 ordinary shares in
Barclays PLC at a price of #16.75 per ordinary share.

The trust is a discretionary trust for the benefit of
employees and former employees (and their families) of
Barclays PLC and its subsidiaries.

As a result of these transactions, the trustees of all the
Barclays Group employees' benefit trusts hold a total of
6,578,506 ordinary shares in Barclays PLC, in which the
following directors of Barclays PLC have an interest as
potential beneficiaries:

Mr A R F Buxton, Mr W J Gordon, Sir Peter Middleton, Mr O H J
Stocken and Mr J M Taylor.
