            BARCLAYS CONFIRMS DISCUSSIONS WITH CSFB
              CONCERNING PARTIAL DISPOSAL OF BZW
                               
                               
Barclays PLC today confirms that it is in exclusive
discussions with Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB) regarding a
proposal made relating to the disposal of the UK and
continental European equities, equity capital markets and
mergers and acquisition advisory businesses of BZW.

The BZW businesses in Australasia and Asia-Pacific are not
included in the discussions with CSFB; nor is the equity
derivatives business. Barclays will now seek a purchaser for
these other businesses.
