HSBC Holdings plc is the Korea Support Group coordinator for the
United Kingdom and the representative at international meetings
with other coordinating banks, the International Monetary Fund
and the Republic of Korea.  The participating UK banks are
Barclays Bank, Lloyds Bank, National Westminster Bank, The Royal
Bank of Scotland, Standard Chartered Bank and HSBC (which
includes Midland Bank).

The aim of the banks' meetings, which are continuing on a regular
basis, is to contribute to the international effort aimed at
restoring the Republic of Korea's position in the international
markets and easing its ability, and that of the Korean banks, to
manage short-term liabilities.

An HSBC spokesman said that the participating UK banks have
agreed to rolling over the maturity of their short-term money
placements with the Korean banks until 31 March 1998.
