Barclays Bank PLC as trustee of the Barclays PLC 1991 UK
Profit Sharing Schemes, purchased 10,216 Barclays PLC shares
on 12 March 1998 at a price of #17.95 per share.

The UK Profit Sharing Scheme is a discretionary trust for the
benefit of employees and former employees of Barclays Bank PLC
and its subsidiaries.

As a result of these transactions, the trustees of all the
Barclays Group employees' benefit trusts hold a total of
10,411,429 ordinary shares in Barclays PLC.  Mr A R F Buxton,
Mr J M Taylor, Sir Peter Middleton, Mr W J Gordon and Mr O H J
Stocken, Directors of Barclays PLC, are amongst the potential
beneficiaries under the trusts and have today notified the
Company of their interests as such.  No consideration was
payable by potential beneficiaries for the acquisition of
interests under the trusts.
