          Barclays Global Investors to Acquire LongView Group, Inc.

(July 17, 1998 San Francisco)-Barclays Global Investors (BGI), part of the
Barclays Group, is pleased to announce that it has signed a conditional
agreement to acquire the LongView Group, Inc. of Boston, Massachusetts,
which had a net asset value of US$ 1.6 million as at January 31, 1998. The
transaction is subject to customary conditions and regulatory approval.

The LongView Group is a supplier of institutional portfolio management and
trading desk software for the investment management industry. Currently the
Group serves 34 clients, including Barclays Global Investors, the world's
largest institutional investment manager with more than $575 billion in
assets managed and advised as of May 31, 1998. The acquisition marks an
opportunity for both firms to combine their established expertise in the
investment management industry.

According to John Martinez, CEO of BGI's Capital Markets Group, the move to
acquire the LongView Group will ultimately benefit BGI clients. "As one of
the largest clients of LongView, we have first-hand knowledge of LongView's
management, capabilities and potential for growth. Our support will allow
them to accelerate their innovations to the investment management industry,
in turn increasing the efficiencies of BGI's business and allowing us to
provide the cost and risk control our clients' demand."

Preston Ford, president of the LongView Group, also sees the acquisition as
advantageous. "This move enables us to invest aggressively in the products
and support services that our clients have come to depend on. By teaming
with BGI, we get the capital we need and a partner who is one of the most
well-established and global firms in the industry and who understands the
importance of playing globally and for the long term," noted Ford.

It is expected that the transaction will close in the third quarter 1998.
LongView and its successful product, LandMark, will retain their name. All
LongView staff will remain in their current Boston location under the
management of Preston Ford. Preston Ford will report to John Martinez, who,
in addition to his role of CEO of BGI's Capital Markets Group, is also a
Managing Director and a member of BGI's Management Committee.
