                       SHARE REPURCHASE
                               
Barclays PLC announces that on 11 August 1998 it purchased for
cancellation 835,000 of its ordinary shares at a price of
1,633.920p per ordinary share and 876,966 ordinary shares at a
price of 1,629.597p per ordinary share.

The Group has now completed its #500 million buyback programme
for 1998; some 29.3 million shares have been purchased for
cancellation, representing approximately 1.9% of the Company's
issued share capital at 1 January 1998.
