Notification of directors' interests : Companies Act s329
                              
The independent trustee of the Barclays Group (ESAS)
Employees' Benefit Trust yesterday notified the Company that
it has purchased a total of 37,615 shares on 2 September
1998 at a price of 1,292p per share.

The Trusts are discretionary trusts for the benefit of
employees and former employees (and, in each case, their
families) of Barclays Bank PLC and its subsidiaries.
Following these transactions, the trustees of all the
Barclays Group employees' benefit trusts hold a total of
8,069,762 shares in Barclays PLC in which the following
directors of Barclays PLC have an interest as potential
beneficiaries: Mr A R F Buxton, Mr W J Gordon, Sir Andrew
Large, Mr C J Lendrum, Sir Peter Middleton, Mr O H J
Stocken, Mr J M Taylor and Mr J S Varley.
