              STATEMENT REGARDING LONG-TERM CAPITAL MANAGEMENT

Barclays confirms that it is part of a consortium of major banks and
investment firms which has agreed in principle to provide new financing to
Long-Term Capital Management (LTCM).

Barclays Capital has a number of well-established financing and trading
arrangements with LTCM.  Barclays believes that this recapitalisation
provides sufficient liquidity for LTCM to realise the inherent value of its
portfolio over time without disorderly liquidation.

Barclays does not expect a negative impact on its own profit and loss
account as a result of this situation.
