The independent trustee of the Barclays Group (ESAS) Employees' Benefit
Trust, (the "trust") notified the company on 25 March that they have on, 22
March 1999, released 528,015 ordinary shares in Barclays PLC to participants
in the Executive Share Award Scheme, of which 165,368 ordinary shares were
sold on 23 March 1999 by the trustees on behalf of participants to meet
their tax liabilities.  The trust is a discretionary trust for the benefit
of employees and former employees (and their families) of Barclays Bank PLC
and its subsidiaries.

The ordinary shares released to directors of Barclays PLC and the number of
ordinary shares sold on their behalf by the trustees are set out below,
together with details of further sales made by certain directors on 23 March
1999, and the shares retained by them.

Mr C J Lendrum, Sir Peter Middleton, Mr O H J Stocken and Mr J S Varley.
